Positive Opening Game

Result : Claregalway 0-17 Moycullen 1-8
Match : Senior Football: Irish Citylink Division 1B League
Date : Saturday, 31st March 2012
Venue : Claregalway
Seniors commenced the League with a convincing win over Moycullen in Round 1 played in ideal conditions at Claregalway on Saturday last, March 31st. The six point winning margin was forged out of a strong second half performance after an evenly contested first half. The game was dominated from start to finish by Barry Cullinane’s text book display of high fielding at mid-field.
Claregalway got off to a lively start with points by Brian Moran, Danny Cummins and Anthony Monaghan but Moycullen responded in like fashion and a goal put them in the lead by 1-3 to 0-3 after ten minutes.  Claregalway regained the edge with a brace of points by Danny Cummins, a point each from Brian Moran and Michael Noonan, a soaring point from 40 metres and a 45 both by Adrian Faherty, followed by a pointed free by Enda O’Connell. Claregalway led at half-time by 0-10 to 1-5. Claregalway dominated the second half to extend their tally to 17 points including many scores that were well worked by the forwards, such as, Brian Moran’s point after Colm O’Hagan’s ball carrying run upfield mid-way in the second half. Their tally could have been more but for the short passing that went astray. Joe Kearney and Michael Noonan were impressive throughout.
Team: Brian O'Donoghue, Keith McDermott, Anthony Watson, Stephen Cunniffe, Joe Kearney, Austin Sammon, Colm O'Hagan, Adrian Faherty (0-4, two frees, one 45), Barry Cullinane, Michael Noonan (0-1), Anthony Monaghan (0-1), Peter Divilly, Danny Cummins (0-4), Enda O'Connell (0-1, free), Brian Moran (0-4, one free). Subs. used: Conor Costelloe (0-1) for Anthony Monaghan, Niall McGovern (0-1) for Enda O'Connell, Brian Day for Peter Divilly.
