Juniors Kick Off 2012 With Narrow Win

Result : Claregalway 1-7 Cortoon 1-6
Match : North Board Junior A League Div. 3
Date : Saturday, 7th April 2012
Venue : Claregalway

The tight winning margin was a reflection of very competitive game for this, the first round of the  League at Claregalway on Saturday evening last (Apr. 7th.). Claregalway had the upper hand in possession from the start and were 1-2 to 0-1 up mid way through the first half, the goal extremely well taken by Adrian Moran after a rebound off the Cortoon keeper following a Niall McGovern cross. Cortoon lifted their game, responding with a point and soon had a goal of their own for their efforts after a high ball broke in front of goal. Niall McGovern  added two points and John Evans a point during the second quarter, before Cartoon added another to leave Claregalway leading by a single point at half time after being guilty of some wayward shooting.

The second half saw the pace drop off considerably and Cortoon drew level with 10 minutes to go, after outscoring Claregalway 3 points to two, ours from frees by Niall McGovern and Fergal MacEvoy. In a tense last few minutes though, Peter Divilly clinched the winner with a well taken point.

Claregalway had sterling performances from Rob Moran who made an excellent save in the first half, Pat Stephens, Mark Goldrick, Richie Commins  and Keith McDermott played well in defence, while Brian Day won the lion’s share of the midfield possession. Niall McGovern, Peter Divilly, Michael Noonan and Adrian Moran were hard working up front.

Team: Rob Moran, Mark Goldrick, Pat Stephens, Niall Clarke, Richie Commins, Keith McDermott, Ryan Harrington, Brian Day, Eoin Feeney, Mike Noonan, Niall McGovern, Peter Divilly, Paul Loughlin, Adrian Moran, John Evans.
