Positive Win in League

Result : Claregalway 3-15 Ballinasloe 3-7
Match : U16 League Round 2
Date : Tuesday, 3rd April 2012
Venue : Claregalway

Claregalway’s game against Ballinasloe was played last Tuesday April 3rd. at Lakeview. The pitch was in great shape and weather conditions were good for the game. There was a strong wind blowing down the pitch from the town end. Claregalway won the toss and elected to play with the wind.

Playing against the wind, Ballinasloe opened the scoring with a point from play. The home team were slow to get into their stride and struggled to take advantage of the wind at their backs. After 10 minutes Claregalway started to take control with points from Damien Dolan, Jack Keighrey, Sean Loftus and 3 in-a-row from Mark Rohan. Towards the end of the half Andrew Connolly got in for a well taken goal. At half time, Claregalway had a healthy lead, 1-11 to 0-3.

For the 2nd half, Ballinasloe had the wind and the home team were expecting a backlash. Ballinasloe opened strongly, scoring a point and a goal to cut the lead. However, the home side reacted positively and Damien Dolan got in for a goal. At that stage, Claregalway were in control and despite playing into the wind matched Ballinasloe score for score. The home team maintained a 7 or 8 point gap through the half. Towards the end of the game Chris Carroll scored a goal to leave the final score 3-15 to 3-7 in favour of Claregalway.

This was a good performance from Claregalway and an improvement from the opening game in the league. The team and individual players applied the lessons learned from the first game and put in a good effort against Ballinasloe.

Listed below is the team for the game.

Liam Egan, Sean Keogh, Keith Herwood, Kevin Ruane, Sean Loftus, Padraig Kearney, Peter O’Connor, Mark Rohan, Paddy Griffin, Andrew Connolly, Chris Carroll, Aaron Grealish, Jack Keighrey , Damian Dolan, Matthew Nally, Daniel Coyle, Brian Keane, Cian Mullen, James O’Dea, Ryan Manning.
